If there is anyone who should not be kicked out of the class its me. Why? Because I am awesome and how can you kick an awesome person out of class? Without me, classroom discussions would become sessions of intense boredom from the lack of real reason to be in class. What’s the reason you say? It’s the desire of individuals to bask in my all powerful knowledge of books.* I am the only person who can safely say they survived a reading of Sesame Street A, B, C’s. The intensity of intellectual reverences in that book makes everyone jealous that I can see the deeper meanings in everything. This gift allows me to make unusual but completely factual references** taking our classroom discussions to an entirely new level of deep meaning.

                For example, my in-depth analysis of (C is for cookie monster in the sesame street book) lead to a heated and explosive debate about communism in modern times in high school. Yes, I only have that incredible gift to see that the cookie monster’s action of always eating cookies refers to communism getting fat and high cholesterol off the “cookies” of society. What are the cookies of society?…  Job opportunities and yes it makes sense because I said it who can deny an awesome person’s wisdom.

        As you can see my awesomeness contributes to my insight into books like never before. Just that one example should have you desiring to bask in my glorifying awesomeness of literary knowledge. Yes that one example should make perfect sense and justifies my unique gift. If my come crazy reason you are still decided on kicking me out of class let me ask you one more question…

I have chosen to write my essays on the pros and cons of bagels and muffins respectfully. Its a breakfast topic that has touched us all in some way whether its the emotional 5 min bond you have with your blueberry muffin in the morning or the simplicity of circular bread, we all must face this undeniably excruciating decision in our lives. 

This might seem like a rather droll decision however, since the beginning of time, (and baked goods) there has always been choices and with specializing chain restaurants, the evidence is clear… there has never been so much stress on breakfast! Bagels are easier to eat and run and while I am not totally sure why you would actually run during breakfast, its a solid concept nonetheless. But who can forget the great multitude of wonders a muffin can bring to your taste buds with its numerous varieties of flavors, clearly they both have their benefits. 

Sadly, both have their flaws, such as the primitive bagel that has yet to master the art of “rising” to the challenge of sophistication that the muffin has achieved. The muffin simply can’t handle the stress of its dominating form and crumbles at the pressures of everyday travel. Only time (and research) will tell if this breakfast war will have resolution, and as you sit down to read my essays, why don’t you treat yourself to a breakfast of a muffin or a bagel?

One of my favorite movies has to be the first Pirates of the Caribbean. My personal favorite character, and I am sure many others, is Jack Sparrow. Just the comical action he brings to the movie makes it one of the most enjoyable films I have ever watched. Unlike other movies, Pirates of the Caribbean’s action and plot scenes flow seamlessly together and make the events seem more like random chances then a scheduled plot. I really like that style because it keeps you guessing on what kind of random event might happen next. A perfect example of this is how the movie keeps you guessing whether Jack Sparrow is a hero or a villain until the very end.

                The next three on my favorite movie list have to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ever since I read the books in middle school, I have been completely captivated by the sheer magnitude of story in the movies. The scenery makes it an absolutely spectacular film experience that really draws you into the world of Middle Earth. A movie tops my list when it can get me so involved I forget about the stresses of everyday life. It might sound a little like I am trying to write less for this blog but in all honestly there are not some specific scenes that are my favorite within the 9 hours of footage present in the trilogy. I really do enjoy everything in those movies and cannot pick out one scene as my favorite.

                Finally, if I had to choose another top movie it would be Shrek. At first I actually did not thing that Shrek was that good of a movie but over time it grew on me. The parody of childhood fairytales is like any other of its kind. My favorite aspect of the movie is how the film makers put a non familiar character into a fairytale world. As they did this they turned Shrek himself into a modern day children’s fairy tale along with preserving the classics. This preservation makes the movie sort of like a time capsule for the classics and introducing another generation to the story’s enjoyed by so many other generations.

Summary:

In this essay Roger Sipher states his opinion on the mandatory school attendance polices in America. He thinks that students, who have no real desire to learn, should not be forced into the classroom. With those unwilling students absent, Roger believes that public schools will change their image. The image of these schools will go from being holding centers of un- educated youth to centers of America’s future. He gives six reasons why he thinks this way which all end up with supporting non mandatory education attendance rules.

          Out of all the places I miss (which there are many), the place I miss the most is my family place in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. My family owns a condo on a strip of land called Estero Island in a large condominium on the 7^th floor. One of the most memorable aspects of our condo is its view over Estero Bay where you can sit on the couch and watch dolphins and boats go by. I cannot even begin to describe how relaxing that entire experience is. When I am there, I usually sit for hours upon hours in total bliss and my only care in the world is whether that boat just ran over that dolphin I was watching (which doesn’t happen too often and the dolphins always live).             I think I really miss it even more now, when it’s cold outside because anyone who has been to Florida knows that it’s generally warm down there. My family and I usually go down sometime in late June early July. For some, that might be a little too warm however, it’s the peak of the offseason and you can get into any restaurant or attraction without a wait.

I guess, if I had to choose one word to describe how I feel when I’m down there its “relaxation!”. My only goal on that type of vacation is to sustain basic human life with as little effort as possible, in other words: the greatest most peaceful relaxation ever. So Ft. Myers Beach Florida tops my list for places I miss the most, especially during the cold long walks to class in the morning.

Between the three kinds of media pertaining to this topic of street children, the movie was the most moving for me. Simply pictures or words do not have the same affect as actually seeing events in real time. When I was reading the essay, it was up to my imagination to picture and relate to the subjects. What was a little more effective were the pictures. There the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” really comes alive. In the picture of the twins, just the expressions on the two older men’s faces is more moving to me than the essay. As two twin and shirtless brothers stand there holding drinks their faces really tell the story of their hard life and suddenly their problems become more real. The exhausted look in their eyes tells the viewer how they feel at the moment and something special about photos are, that expression is forever captured in memory.

Finally, the most effective medium, that I could relate to, was the “Streetwise” movie. As I sat there and watched these children act on their immature beliefs, I couldn’t help but feel bad for them. It is so sad to see anyone in those conditions especially children. The movie combined both the essay and the images to create a very informative and emotional experience. Clearly, in my opinion the movie was the most effective medium in this regard. 

I agree with Bordo’s point that in today’s modern world, people are continuously bombarded with images and ideals of how the human body should reflect perfection. In my opinion, perfection is in the eye of the beholder where that particular image is different for everyone. Such is the case with people like super models who are so thin that some view them as disgusting. The marvels of modern medicine have given birth to the age of plastic surgery and ideas that there are ways to become “perfect”. I on the other hand, though I do respect the aspiration of perfection, feel that there is a line between perfection and loss of identity. When one is so consumed with their appearance and go off to become “perfect” looking, it can sometimes lead to their loss of individuality and the rise of conformity.

                When this occurs, I believe that the individuals involved become so “perfect” they turn into the very opposite of what their intended goal is. Such is the example of the “oranges.” We all have seen them, those people who have gone tanning so much that the resulting look clearly shows a fake tan and a hint of glowing “orange”. To me, this appearance is actually the opposite of perfect.  While being tan can look good, that particular group, has overdone their appearance, probably as a result of being influenced by a famous person’s appearance. By the pursuit of perfection they are modeling not their own image but rather some one else’s. The key point in all of this is someone else, because perfect is different for everybody and you end up losing what makes you unique and “perfect” to someone else who holds, or will hold, a greater level of importance in your life.

There are a lot of memories that have affected me in some way or another. One of the most recent memories that has had an impact on my life is my first week as a student at Purdue. This was a life changing experience and is significant in many ways. This was my first real experience of living on my own. During that first week I also formed lasting friendships with a variety of people.           

I will never forget the feeling on that very first day when my parents left. It was a weird sense of being alone yet in control at the same time. This was the start to being in control of my own time, no one to tell me when to do, or not do, something. I think the most dramatic change during the first few days pertains to food. I had to find places to eat, such as the dining halls, which is quite different than raiding the kitchen closet at home. I remember looking forward to this freedom all throughout High School, and as I began to experience it, it was a very surreal feeling. Being in charge of my life makes me a better person because I manage my responsibilities under my own guidance.

                The other aspect of my memorable first week at Purdue is the many new friendships made. Everyone that was a part of Boiler Gold Rush was going through the exact same thing which made it easy to relate to one another. Coming from a High School where large amounts of diversity were lacking, the I jumped at the chance to meet people from many different backgrounds. Unlike before, my newly made friends are very diverse which creates a unique and entertaining atmosphere.

                Truly my first week at Purdue is very memorable and important to me. Even now, the Boiler Gold Rush friendships lead to an incredibly enjoyable lifestyle full of unexpected events, such as pranks, to a strong support group when studying which I am immensely grateful for.  

     My college experience has been different than I have expected with my roommate. . Before coming to Purdue, I thought that having a roommate would give me no privacy at all. Now that I have been here for a semester, my initial thoughts on the roommate have changed significantly. I do get a lot more privacy than I thought I would which is great and not what I expected. An example of this would be working on the computer where before college I thought it would be impossible to concentrate and complete assignments however I find that if I need to work on something it’s possible to completely ignore my roommate which gives me some level of privacy. I also thought that getting along all the time with my roommate would be quite difficult but in reality we have no problems getting along whatsoever. This certainly helps make life at Purdue easier and more enjoyable.
